Will My Dog or Cat (Animals) Go to Heaven? Do Pets Have Souls?

cats and dogs in heaven

Question: Will my dog or cat or any animal go to heaven? Also, do pets have souls?

The Answer from Pastor Paul Holt: It is one of the more difficult questions I get because pets today have become like children to many people. We develop deep ties with our dogs and cats. So much so that we buy for them as we would our child.

The bible does not equate people with our pets. While both are described as having the breath of life (Genesis 2:7; Genesis 1:30; 6:17; 7:15, 22), only man is made in the image of God, animals are not. Because man is made in the image of God, he shares attributes such as the mind and the soul. Man was given a spiritual component that animals do not share.

Animals, including our dogs and cats, have been created with a mind and even emotions that remind us of human behavior but they lack the breath of God given to humans. That is why when the Lord caused all of the created order to pass before Adam to be named there was no creature suitable for man like the woman was.

That does not mean that in the messianic age or heaven we must be without animals, specifically pets such as dogs and cats. The Lord created us to enjoy the other life He created. When God created animals, He called them good (Genesis 1:25). There will most definitely be animals during the millennial kingdom (Isaiah 11:6; 65:25).

While I do not believe the pets we will have in heaven will be resurrected dogs and cats we enjoyed here on earth, I do believe the Lord will allow us to enjoy new pets to love.

Do you disagree with my opinion? It’s Ok, I can take it. Here is a book that does too, using scripture the author shows that we will see our pets in heaven.

Not to agree or disagree with you Pastor but I have a personal experience to share; which neither argues with nor confirms the conclusion of your article. Following a life in which ‘I believed’ but did not necessarily follow our Lord in the manner in which I should have been, a mutual friend of ours brought the Lord fully back into my life. I think you know that story. Him, with the Lords help and with the help of my precious and Godly wife has taught me more about love than I have even known. To try to make a long story short, we had a very dear and precious dog who was a fully devoted ‘daddy’s little girl’. Upon her passing, the second major loss in my family since my rebirth, I was literally ripped to shreds for weeks. Flowing tears EVERY morning and EVERY night. I had an experience; no, not imaginary; in which the Holy Ghost literally brought her back to me one night. Not in person, but in presence. I suddenly felt the warmth of her body for several minutes where she would lay across my chest for hours on end and I also experienced the distinct feeling of her precious little tongue placing kisses on my cheek exactly where she would when she lay’d in that position. That sensation lasted with me for a full day. Many will say. maybe including you, it’s my imagination and others will say it’s my pain meds but I KNOW !!! This was His way of letting me know that she was accepted and was in a very good place. Be that in heaven or some other location, I do not know. But I DO KNOW she is in a very good place and being well taken care of; wherever that may be ! I have not shed a single tear from MY loss since then !!!

Thank you for sharing that Rick. I know that the Lord can do anything and I trust Him to do what is best.
